Last article, we talked about suggestions from outside visitors. They could post free-form notes from the individual or family pages to you, the administrator.
Now let’s let your users post specific information on events in your TNG site.
First, we need to allow your users to be able to submit suggestions to you. So go into the Administration panel and go to Users. Select a user that you want to have submission rights. On that user’s profile page, look down the Rights column. There is one setting labelled “Allow to submit edits for administrative review”, see below.
So let’s run through an example user suggestion. I have set up a dummy user account, “Jim B” and have allowed him to submit edits. Jim, having fun exploring my Benedict family tree, discovers some missing information. He has just stumbled across the family of John Stephin and Ann Tovye, and notices that the marriage date is not complete- it shows only the year and Jim knows more. How does he inform the main researcher?
Looking a bit closer at the page, Jim notices a small “make a notation” icon (see right) adjacent to the Married event on John Stephin’s profile page. This invites Jim to click on the icon to make a suggestion.
Clicking on the icon brings up a pop-up box, with text entry places for accepting several potential changes.
Note that it shows the current information (1786) with spots for adding the suggested data plus further information on place, type and notes.
Jim B adds in his suggestion of a full date (4 Jul 1576, in the date format that TNG likes) and he adds the place of marriage. If Jim B had the reference source, that would be added into the notes box.
Jim B then Saves Changes.
The TNG site then politely thanks Jim B for his contribution and informs us that the site administrator (you) will be informed shortly.
And that is what happens next.
Now the administrator takes action. After logging in, we go to the Family page in question. Notice that the administrator’s email includes the Family ID number so that you just need to search for Family (D = F134.
This brings up the left screen. Note that the Review tab is sporting an asterisk (*). So let’s go there next.
Do you agree? Then click on Save and Delete (that is, delete the suggestion, we don’t need it any more). Not sure? Then Postpone. If Jim B’s suggestion is hogwash, then Ignore and Delete. You might send him an explanatory email as a courtesy if you want.
But it was a good suggestion, so we accept. The result is shown below. You did not have to re-key the information into TNG yourself, saving some effort and avoiding any keystroke errors.
