This tutorial section applies to the Guild’s (Guild of One-Name Studies) MWP project for type 3 TNG websites.  These sites use a unique configuration of TNG, so that multiple Guild members benefit from using TNG to preserve their family surname study, without requiring technical skills for web management.  See the “About this Website” for more details.

A GEDCOM file is the most widely recognized file format standard for creating a family tree. Most genealogical programs recognize this format, which allows you to easily move your tree to the genealogical program of your choosing.

Note: A GEDCOM file is a text file, that doesn’t include the actual photos but it may contain the links to the photos original location on your computer or family site.

GEDCOM, an acronym for GEnealogical Data COMmunication, is a specification for exchanging genealogical data between different genealogy software.

TNG is a fully functioning family tree application that can house your family trees, branches, ancestors, their families, cemeteries and stories.  Even more, it can handle your sources, references and repositories.  Further, TNG holds onto photos, headstones, military records, census, birth / marriage /death / burial documents, and even more.

  And most importantly, it does it all while being a software application on the internet.  TNG is a web-based family tree application that resides on your website.
