Getting Started

I just got my new TNG site, so now what do I do?

Obviously you want to get started loading your data, but here are a few pointers to consider before you start. These come from ‘experience’. When you do start to load your data, do a trial GEDCOM update of a small number of people first. This will enable you to look at the information to see if there are any problems.

First, decide on whether you are going to have TNG as your primary family research tool or not. If you can, clean up your research information ahead of entering it into TNG. Then go through the list of tasks, below. There are links to many other tutorial sections to guide you through the various steps to success.

Primary or Secondary Site

Will TNG become your primary or your secondary family history site? And who do I allow into my TNG site?

A primary site means that you are using TNG as your primary, or first tool for storing and managing your family research. Perhaps TNG will be your only tool for holding all the data and media on the ancestry. If you are considering having other people contributing information to your family trees, then this is the way to go. Your family members and other contributors can view, comment and contribute to the research through becoming users on the website.

If instead, you want to continue to use a family tree application on your home computer as your primary tool, you can still use TNG as a secondary site, for public viewing and for an external data storage for archiving your study. In this case, you do not want people modifying the TNG data, because then your TNG site will no longer be a replicate of the home application. In this case, you would limit other users to the roles of visitor, guest or submitter. Also, each time you update the TNG site with data from your home computer [add link to future GEDCOM tutorial], this would then overwrite the data files, wiping out any contributions from your users. See Users and Access for more details on roles.
